GO WEST - MANHATTAN WEST THAT IS

Tucked in between the Moynihan Train Hall and Hudson Yards is the Brookfield Manhattan West complex. An area with shops - everything from the official store of the National Hockey League (Madison Square Garden is nearby) to standards like Starbucks. But the reason why I visit is because of the changing displays of public art and performance.

Currently on view is Liz West’s “Hymn to the Big Wheel” a colorful kaleidoscope fun house that you’ll want to see from the outside as well as explore the interior. There’s a ramp installed to facilitate that. On view daily until September 5th. If you miss it at Manhattan West you’ll have another chance to see it downtown at Brookfield Place from September 9 though 25.

Nearby construction fences are adorned with a photography exhibition. Displaying the work of 5 photographers presented by Brookfield Arts in partnership with Photoville Festival. On view until late November.

Then visit Citrovia a lemon grove built under scaffolding. Lots of opportunities for photos and selfies among the lemon trees. Long term installation while the residential tower is being constructed.

During warmer months the Manhattan West plaza hosts performances like the Phantom Limb Company’s “The Puppet Cycle” and during the winter there’s an ice skating rink.
