Do’s and Don’ts
-
ALWAYS board at the designated boarding sign on the platform.
If you can catch the attention of the conductor, let him or her know where you are getting off so they will look for you.
If you have to walk the scooter onto the train, shut it off, put the key in a secure place and put the scooter into neutral, BEFORE the train pulls in. Leave enough room for passengers to exit and then board.
Park the scooter near that door if possible—unless that car has a designated wheelchair area. I find staying close to the door is the best option for a quick exit. Yes you will block half of the door, but most passengers are very gracious and will move around you.
Please note: two scooters will fit, but always make room for passengers to enter and exit.
ALWAYS travel with your charger and MAKE SURE it is WRAPPED IN PLASTIC in case of an unexpected shower. Add a spare phone charger too. Believe me, it comes in handy when you least expect it.
ALWAYS travel with a lightweight rain cape and three heavy-duty paper clips.
Do purchase a clear plastic cover made specifically for the tiller in case of rain.
-
If you don’t need it, leave the back basket home. That additional 6+ inches really takes up too much space.
Don’t panic. There will always be another train.
-
All kinds of crazy things can and do happen on the subway. It’s underground theater and you have the best seat in the house. Enjoy the ride.

Do carry an empty shopping bag. You never know when you’ll see something to buy.
Do have some bungie cords or large rubber bands that go around the seat—good for securing a shortened cane.
Don’t put a cup of coffee in the cup holder attached to the tiller—even covered, and expect it not to spurt liquid. I learned the hard way. :)
