MoMA - PS1
Housed in a former 19th Century school MoMA-PS1 is located at 22-25 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City, Queens. This contemporary art museum, a branch of mid-town Manhattan's MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) presents changing exhibits, features a large open courtyard, a cafe and a bookstore.
When you enter the building you’ll pass through bag check and check in at the admissions desk. After going through the next set of doors you’ll be in the large open air courtyard. The accessible ramp will be against the wall to your left.
Continue proceeding up the ramp
At the top of the ramp is the main entrance to the building and push doors, enter into the lobby of the building and there is a greeter who can answer any questions you might have and give you directions to the elevators, exhibits etc.
One of the highlights at the museum is James Turrell’s “Meeting” - the work features a cut out in the roof which allows a view of the sky, changing light creates a shadow so each time you visit the experience will be slightly different. This room is occasionally closed due to bad weather or other factors but I like to visit each time I’m at PS1.
There are 3 floors of exhibition space which are accessible by a large elevator. You might see works of art in various media: painting, sculpture, video and photography. Check the website MoMA PS1 for a list of all current exhibits.
On this visit we saw the works of artist Umar Rashid. The series is titled “Ancien Regime Change 4, 5, and 6”
On the same floor were works by artist Frieda Toranzo Jaeger: Autonomous Drive 2022. Her mix of paint and embroidery is worth a close look.
On another floor was the work of artist Jumana Manna: Break, Take, Erase, Tally - which featured sculptures and 2 videos.
As stated before the exhibitions do change so please check the museum’s website MoMA PS1 before visiting to see what is on display.
Like many older buildings there are some things to be noted while navigating through the building. There is a very large elevator to take you to the three floors open to the public. Your best and largest restroom is on the first floor - the stall has a sink and grab bars. It's very wheelchair friendly but if you have a large mobility scooter you probably need to leave it outside and walk into the enclosure. The restrooms located on the other floors are smaller and narrower.
GETTING THERE:
Subway: 7 train to Court Square - take elevator from the platform (P) to the mezzanine level (7M) and then go through the door at the turnstile and take that elevator to street level. When you exit on the street turn right, cross the street towards the Court Square Diner and continue about a block and a half.
